Helge, the patriarch of a large and rich family, is celebrating his 60th birthday; all the relatives, friends and colleagues have gathered to honour this very special man. Many praising speeches are given until one of Helge’s sons decides he no longer can, nor wants to remain silent.
Some blood needs to be spilt to be able to breathe again. In this family thriller, farce alternates with tragedy, emotions run from silent denial to shocked stupefaction and then back to careless unconcern again. In the midst of intoxicated celebration, a fierce fight about and for the truth is fought.
The creativity and the original theatrical language of director Alexander Morfov introduces a world of bright colours to the Daile Theatre’s repertoire – his direction of Finita la comedia! and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest gathered a wide mass of viewers making them both laugh to tears and become carried away with emotion.
The play is based on Festen (The Celebration, 1998, directed by Thomas Vinterberg), the first film created by the rules of Dogme 95 Manifesto, created by a movement of Danish film makers.
