JEZ BUTTERWORTH

JERUSALEM

/ With an English translation in subtitles /

A human drama in II acts
Translated from English by Jānis Elsbergs
Premiere on 26 January 2018

Johnny Byron is an eccentric, who enjoys life and tells fantastically improbable stories. He used to be untameable and, according to himself, has in many ways remained unsurpassed. Men admired him and no woman could resist his charm.

Even now, the morning of a local farmers fair, Johnny remains a popular man, who cannot complain about a lack of attention. Everyone wants something from him. The local authorities want to evict him from a forest den, his son wishes Johnny would finally take him to the fair, a father wants to teach him a lesson and a group of different, often underage associates are looking for his inexhaustible stock of drugs and alcohol.

Johnny attracts teenagers and misfits, who do not want to or fail to grow up. His boldly obscene and thrillingly breathtaking tales of an idealized mythical past world – a world of giants, whom nobody needs anymore, give life to Johnny’s longing for primal wildness and insubordination to the system. Yet, could some of these peculiar stories turn out to be true after all?

British playwright Jez Butterworth is regarded as one of the most interesting and successful playwrights of our time. Adaptation of his play Jerusalem at the London Royal Court Theatre in 2009 earned widespread acclaim with critics calling it one of the best plays of the 21st century.
