Utilising his unlimited power over the border between life and death, Viktor Frankenstein creates a grotesquely unhappy monster who is thrown into a world that is extremely hostile to it. Frankenstein has no inkling of the price he will have to pay. The fallen angel turns on his creator.
Mary Shelley wrote her masterpiece of grotesque literature, Frankenstein, or Modern Prometheus at the age of 18, drawing inspiration for it from a night of opium fuelled horror with her husband Percy Shelley and George Gordon Byron in 1816.
The British playwright Nick Dear’s stage adaptation of Frankenstein was written especially for a National Theatre production directed by Danny Boyle in 2011. The roles of Viktor Frankenstein and The Creature were alternatively performed by both Benedict Cumberbatch and Johnny Lee Miller.
