NICOLAS BILLON
ELEPHANT SONG

Translated from the English language by Vija Vītola

Premiere – 16th October, 2015

An eminent psychiatrist is missing from his consulting rooms at the hospital. The last person to have seen him is his patient Michael. In an attempt to find out the possible reasons for the disappearance, the Director of the Hospital, Dr. Greenberg questions the patient. Micheal, on the other hand, enters into a filigree game of psychological manipulation that turns into a confession.

The Elephant Song is the Canadian playwright Nicolas Billion’s (1978) first play and had its premiere in the USA in 2004. In 2014, the Canadian director, Charles Biname made a film version.

The film critic Denis Harvey has called the Elephant Song a sophisticated play where the audience is captivated by a polyphony of psychological tension, human wisdom and the call of nature. Nicolas Billon often tweets about newly discovered planets in the cosmos. And such is his Elephant Song – a new planet in the skies of contemporary theatre.

With this production of Elephant Song, the former Daile Theatre actor Andrejs Žagars returns as a director.
