Maxim Gorky
CHILDREN OF THE SUN /A Drama in 2 Acts/
Translated from Russian by Dž. Dž. Džilidžers
Premiere: 9 January, 2015
Maxim Gorky (1868-1936) is one of the most important and well-known Russian writers and thinkers in the world. His play Children of the Sun (1905) was written in the Petropavlovsk prison where Gorky ended up as a result of his involvement in the events of the January revolution. It is a dramatic story about an intelligentsia family, destined by fate to live in difficult times of change. Wise, polite and good people, who at a time had their own hopes and ideals, are suddenly faced with the horrid face of hate and a mob mentality.
Love, loneliness, alienation and longing – they are the eternal themes of classical art and literature, but so much is influenced by the era in which fate dictates you live. There, where blood has been spilt, flowers will not grow. How to live beautifully? Everyone needs a little luck, and there is never enough love.
Already in 1905, his play Children of the Sun was performed at the Moscow Art Theatre, and in 1906 is was performed at the Riga Latvian Theatre.
