Gustav Flaubert
MADAME BOVARY/A Melodrama in 2 Acts/
Dramatized by Rolandas Atkočiūnas
Translated by Evita Mamaja
Premiere: 14 November, 2014
The novel Madame Bovary written by Gustav Flaubert in 1856 is deemed to be one of the masterpieces of world literature, and one of the all-time greatest novels alongside Lev Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina.
Parallels between these novels can also be drawn in the story – Emma Bovary is the wife of a doctor, who, tormented by boredom, lives beyond her means and enters a sinful relationship to escape the emptiness and loneliness of provincial life.
The portrayal of the human passions in Madame Bovary is so believable and understandable because in this melodrama Flaubert writes about real events in an actual family of the time.
Here there are practically no positive heroes, and the author’s scepticism for human nature and weaknesses in character can be felt at every turn of events. However, Flaubert stands by his protagonists completely – his famous quote is: „I myself am Madame Bovary!”
